When I was a child Halloween was one of the most exciting nights of the year. Our entire cul-de-sac of kids banded together to terrify the neighbourhood dressed as tiny witches, goblins and ghouls in search of chocolate treasure from our ever tolerant neighbours.
It was a total thrill when the door slowly opened. We caterwauled “TRICK OR TREAT” in unison, and the bowl of sweets was proffered for our eager mits to dive into. Simple joys that have seemed timeless, as now I find myself the sweet bearer to hoards of mini monsters each year.
However, 2020 will be a very different kind of Halloween. No socially distanced trick or treating in Covid 19, no grown up Halloween parties giving adults opportunities to don their best “Sexy Cat” outfit (there is always one….) or festoon their frames in reams of toilet roll to create a bargain basement Mummy (especially not in Pandemic, toilet roll is hard enough to come by in lockdown).
But that doesn’t mean that Halloween is cancelled. Whether you are Tik Tok’ing your best Thriller moves, organising a Halloween party by Zoom with devilish drinks, or you’re lining up your best Horror films to scare your lockdown bubble with, you can still celebrate this Halloween.
And as parts of the country enter further lockdowns, and the nights draw in, we are all starting to miss the snatches of socialising we found with Summer lockdown easing. You, your friends and family will all be feeling a little more distanced than before again. So why drop them a line, send them a card, send them their favourite song, and let the lyrics do the talking.
